Standing at the highest point of the village of Chessy, in the Rhône department, this 13th century fortified castle retains a cylindrical keep and the remains of its defensive wall, rebuilt by abbot Amédée de Roussillon after an earlier 12th century foundation. Ruined during the Wars of Religion, the building was restored in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, then refurbished in the 1970s by decorator Vital-Durand, who also redesigned the gardens. Visitors can see a sloped fortification system pierced with large arrow slits, regarded as the earliest known example of its kind in the Lyon region.
