In Chessy, in the southern Beaujolais region, the château de Courbeville stands above the Azergues valley on a rocky outcrop once settled in Roman times. Its origins date back to the third quarter of the 13th century, when the Varennes family built this fortress of golden stone. The Saillans family, who held the estate in the 17th century, softened its military character by adding a courtyard, a well and Renaissance-style arcades. The site, now privately owned, is mainly used for receptions and events.
