In Bazens, next to the village church, stands the north wing of a Renaissance episcopal residence, the only surviving fragment of a much larger château demolished in the 18th century. Rebuilt at the end of the 15th century for the bishops of Agen, the building owes its reputation to Matteo Bandello, an Italian writer who became bishop here and wrote most of his novellas on site before dying in 1561. What remains today is a hexagonal stair tower, a trace of the pleasure residence once shared by Italian prelates and figures from the French court.
