To make a day of it

Château de Barante stands in Dorat (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Barante stands in the commune of Dorat, in the northeastern Puy-de-Dôme, set within roughly a hundred hectares of parkland overlooking the valley with wide views toward the Chaîne des Puys. Built in the 17th century on land acquired in 1627 by the Brugière de Barante family, it was rebuilt in 1843 after a fire. It is closely linked to Prosper de Barante, a scholar and diplomat whose estate once welcomed guests such as Chateaubriand, Lamartine and Madame de Staël. A neo-Romanesque chapel in the grounds, designed by Prosper Mérimée, adds to the site.
