To make a day of it

Château d'Usson stands in Usson (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

On the hill of Usson, at an altitude of 633 metres in the Puy-de-Dôme, once stood a medieval stronghold protected by three successive walls, among the most formidable in Auvergne. Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, was held there under guard from 1586 and wrote her Memoirs during her stay. What remains today is a fortified gateway, sections of the old ramparts and the levelled ruins of a round tower, the castle having been torn down on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu in 1634.
