La terre de Cherves est citée dès 1445. Elle devient vers 1533 la propriété de Jacques Chesnel, gouverneur de Cognac. Le château est une vaste construction entourée de douves profondes creusées dans le roc. En fer à cheval, l'édifice possède une cour intérieure fermée par des balustres et séparée par un pont de pierre d'une seconde cour délimitée par d'importants communs où l'on pénétre par un porche cintré, couronné lui aussi de créneaux et de mâchicoulis, peut-être postérieurs au château. Les fenêtres sont surmontées de frontons rectangulaires ou arrondis. Le sous-sol montre des voûtes d'arêtes en gros appareil sur lesquelles repose le château. Une cheminée monumentale intacte subsiste encore.
