In Cherves-Richemont, in the Charente region, Château Chesnel has stood since the early 17th century, a French classical style building surrounded by dry moats cut into the rock. The whole complex has kept its original layout: a three-wing forecourt, a main building flanked by towers, a parapet with decorative merlons and a machicolated gallery above the carriage entrance. Visitors find an architecture uncommon in the region, blending ornamental defensive features with a symmetry drawn from Italian models.
