In Uzerche, the Château Bécharie straddles the town's last surviving gate, flanked by two wings that include a square tower and a turret. Built in the early 17th century by the Clédat family on the site of earlier buildings that once sheltered pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela, the château still holds, inside its square tower, wall paintings depicting the twelve sibyls and the twelve Caesars. Below the building, terraced gardens look out over the Vézère valley.
