Saint-Amans-de-Pellagal est situé au sud-ouest du pays de Vaux, le bas-Quercy, qui comprend de nombreux castra. Haut-Castel, cité dans divers textes depuis le Xe siècle sous les noms de Hautmont, Aucastels puis Haut Castel, serait un ancien poste défensif de la famille Durfort, passé aux Loubéjac par mariage. En 1230, Arnaud Gausbert de Castagner épouse Alix de Loubéjac, dame de Haut Castel, et prend possession du château. Les Castagner sont mentionnés de façon régulière dès 1085 aux côtés des plus puissants personnages du pays de Vaux. Haut Castel reste dans la famille Castagner jusqu'en 1614 où il est bombardé durant trois jours à la suite d'une querelle d'héritage entre Antoine de Castagner et sa belle-sœur. Il est ensuite laissé à l'abandon et un nouveau château est édifié sur la colline voisine vers 1760.
