To make a day of it

Manoir de Thou stands in Yzeures-sur-Creuse (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, first quarter of the 16th century, fourth quarter of the 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Thou Manor, built in the 15th century in Yzeures-sur-Creuse, bears witness to the architectural transformations of a seigneurial building that became a working farm. Partially reconstructed from 1580 onwards, it assembles traces of three construction periods: a 15th-century core, additions from the late 15th or early 16th century, and a north wing added in the late 16th century. The eastern residential block, with its elegant facades and Renaissance-decorated openings, overlooks the terraced courtyard; the former chapel pavilion and the cylindrical dovecote complete the ensemble.

What to know

  • The manor has been listed as a historical monument since 2003 for its facades, roofs, and chapel pavilion, as well as the dovecote and terraced courtyard.
  • Access to the interiors and visiting conditions are not documented: inquire before travelling.
  • The building retains the marks of its agricultural past, with the cider press, bakehouse, and outbuildings still visible.

Frequently asked

Who built Thou Manor?
The manor dates from the 15th century. It was partially rebuilt from 1580 onwards, then progressively enlarged until the 18th century, with no particular architect named in the sources.
Can visitors tour the inside of the manor?
Visiting conditions are not specified in the available documentation. Only the facades, roofs, and chapel pavilion are expressly protected.
Why did the original building need to be rebuilt?
Its poor condition in the 16th century justified partial reconstruction from 1580, after which it was converted into a working farm.
