The manor of Fontenay stands in Lignières-de-Touraine, at the foot of a hillside above the Vieux Cher river, on a site thought to have once held a Gallo-Roman villa before this seigneurial residence was built. Raised in the 14th century and extended through the 16th, it retains a rectangular enclosure marked by towers and turrets, still bordered by its now-dry moat. The battlements and the wall walk crowning the ramparts are not medieval but date from the early 20th century, when the estate was reworked and a medieval-style garden was laid out with the help of Joachim Carvallo.
