To make a day of it

Maison à Bar stands in Tannay-le-Mont-Dieu (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Set amid the pastures of Tannay-le-Mont-Dieu, the Maison à Bar is a fortified farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, once a dependency of the Carthusian monks of Mont-Dieu. Its long, narrow layout, pierced with slender openings, and its square tower fitted with a machicolation recall a building meant for defence as much as farming. Part of the surrounding moat still remains, at the foot of the Baret stream near the Ardennes canal.
