To make a day of it

Château de La Berlière stands in La Berlière (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the edge of the village of La Berlière, in the Ardennes, this small château built around 1740 looks more like an elegant countryside folly than a fortress. Its yellow stone front, with five bays and a shallow triangular pediment, faces a park of clipped lime trees and box hedges. Inside, two fireplaces were brought from Belval abbey, and the building is remembered for a moment in May 1940, when a military command post was set up here just before the German breakthrough across the Meuse.
