To make a day of it

The Weilerburg is a ruined spur castle overlooking the Weilertal valley, northeast of Tailfingen, a district of Albstadt. Built around 1100 by the lords of Weilersburg and first recorded in 1113, it now survives only as scant wall remains, a ditch and a rampart around the site of a pentagonal keep. Excavations also uncovered traces of an earlier prehistoric refuge dating back to the late Bronze Age on the same spur.

  • Dense vegetation covers the grounds, so visiting is easiest in spring, late autumn or winter.
  • It is a quiet, largely unimproved site best explored in sturdy shoes on uneven ground.
  • Below the castle hill, near the road from Hausen to Neuweiler, stands a spring once linked to the castle's mill.
