To make a day of it
Schloss Tonna stands in Tonna (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Tonna is a former moated castle built around 1200 for the counts of Gleichen and Tonna, its four wings enclosing a rectangular courtyard on a site of nearly 12,000 square metres. The 35 metre tower and the tall late Gothic house on the northeast side, dating from the early 16th century, are among the oldest surviving parts. Used as an administrative seat for the dukes of Gotha from 1677 and later as a prison between 1861 and 1991, the building now stands empty and in poor structural condition, with an open roof in several places. Since 2020 a local support association has worked on research and preservation, though the castle is not currently open to visitors.
