To make a day of it

Burg Großvargula stands in Großvargula (Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Großvargula, on a loop formed by the river Unstrut, stand the remains of a stronghold once held by the lords of Vargula, vassals of the Landgraves of Thuringia from the twelfth century onward. Of the medieval castle, mostly dismantled in the nineteenth century, only the vaulted gatehouse with its pointed arch survives. What draws attention now is the building that replaced it on the same ground: a Baroque administrative house built in 1727 by architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, with a garden facade of Ionic pilasters and a grand hall decorated with stucco work. Later used as a manor house in the nineteenth century, the building now stands empty.
