Schloss Pretzfeld stands in the village of Pretzfeld, in the Landkreis Forchheim, in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. The present complex, reshaped repeatedly since the late Middle Ages, combines a north and an east wing dating from the late 16th century with an older core wing topped by an octagonal stair tower. Visitors can still make out the 16th century chapel, the enclosure with its round arched gate, and the remains of an 18th century park. Privately owned by the Herrmann family, the Schloss also played a role in German industrial history, housing a Siemens semiconductor research laboratory from 1946 to 2002.
What to know
- The Schloss today belongs to the Herrmann family, descendants of the Nuremberg merchant Josef Kohn who acquired it in 1852.
- The castle chapel, built in 1589-91 and altered in 1764, extends in line with the south wing.
- From 1946 to 2002 a Siemens semiconductor research laboratory operated on the site, led by Eberhard Spenke.
- The 16th to 18th century enclosure wall, with its round arched gate and rounded bastions, can still be seen from outside.
- The 18th century park retains traces of its former path layout and a baroque sandstone sculpture.
