Overlooking the town and the Wiesent valley in Franconia, Gößweinstein Castle occupies a rocky summit. Historians believe it was established in the 11th century by Count Gozwin, and for a long period it remained in the hands of the Bamberg bishops before undergoing a Neogothic transformation in the late 19th century. Late Gothic statues can still be found inside its chapel, while the rocky outcrop beneath the castle is reputed to have provided Richard Wagner with inspiration for the grail castle featured in Parsifal.
