To make a day of it

Schloss Herrenberg stands in Herrenberg (Landkreis Böblingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schloss Herrenberg crowns the Schlossberg hill above the town of Herrenberg, though only ruins remain today. First documented in 1220 as a residence of the Palatine Counts of Tübingen, the building suffered centuries of ground subsidence and damage, including an earthquake in 1733, before being sold for demolition in 1807. Surviving traces include wall remnants, a cellar incorporated since 1957 into an inn, and an old dungeon beneath a tower. The Schlossbergturm, rebuilt from 1957 onward on the stump of the former powder tower, now serves as a viewing tower over the town and surrounding countryside.

What to know

  • The Schlossbergturm tower can be climbed and offers views over Herrenberg and the surrounding area.
  • The old castle cellar was incorporated into an inn, the Schlosskeller.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • The visit mainly involves walking around outdoor ruins and the viewing tower, with no enclosed building to tour.
