To make a day of it

Schloss Gleisenau stands in Ebelsbach (Landkreis Haßberge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Gleisenau stands at the edge of the village of Ebelsbach, in the Landkreis Haßberge in Bavaria, on the site of an older moated castle of which only parts of the outbuildings survive. The present manor house, built in 1772/73 for the canon Otto Philipp Erhart Ernst Groß von Trockau, marks the transition from late Rococo to early Classicism. Notable features include the corner bastions on the stone base, the facades with curved gables above the central bays, the coats-of-arms over the portals, and the adjoining chapel to the south, topped by a hexagonal roof turret with a curved dome.

What to know

  • The main building is not open to the public as a museum: it served as a primary school until 2013, and the outbuildings now house Ebelsbach's municipal administration.
  • A visit is therefore mainly an exterior approach, from the arched bridge crossing the former, now dry, moat.
  • The castle chapel, adjoining the manor house to the south, is recognisable by its sculpted facade facing the village street.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria, a designation that carries no specific visiting arrangements.
  • As no opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are given, a visit should be planned as a look at the exterior rather than an interior tour.
