The Neue Residenz stands alongside the cathedral and the Alte Hofhaltung on the historic square at the heart of Bamberg. Two Renaissance wings from the early seventeenth century are joined by two Baroque wings raised around 1700 for Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, to designs by Leonhard Dientzenhofer. Inside, three state apartments display furniture and artworks from its time as a residence of the prince-bishops and later of the Wittelsbach family. The building's Kaisersaal is frescoed by Melchior Steidl, and it also houses a gallery of early German and Baroque painting, with a rose garden overlooking the city.
