To make a day of it
Burg Wallburg stands in Eltmann (Landkreis Haßberge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Wallburg is a ruined stronghold on a spur of the Steigerwald hills, south of Eltmann in Bavaria. Little remains of this former administrative castle of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg beyond earthworks and a roughly 28-metre-high keep that visitors can still climb. From the top, the view opens onto the Main valley, the Haßberge and the Steigerwald. The site also retains an encircling moat and a well rebuilt in the 20th century.
What to know
- The keep can be climbed, offering a panoramic view from the top.
- Access is via a steep path called the Schlosssteige, rebuilt in 1985 and lined with old sandstone figures.
- Almost nothing remains of the residential buildings, which were dismantled for stone after the administrative seat moved away in 1777.
- The site is outdoors with no known fixed hours or admission fees, so visits are unrestricted.
