To make a day of it

Schloss Friedrichswerth stands in Friedrichswerth (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 17th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Friedrichswerth stands at the southern edge of the village of Friedrichswerth, in the Nesse valley, on the site of a former moated stronghold. Built at the end of the 17th century for Duke Friedrich I of Gotha as a summer residence, it forms a three-wing complex gathered around a clock tower, with a large French-style garden enclosed by moats stretching out behind it. Over the centuries the palace served as a children's home and a training centre, yet much of its 17th-century stucco work and painted ceilings has survived. Since the late 1990s the building has stood empty, so a visit today means mainly viewing it from outside.
