Schloss Freudental is a Baroque building constructed between 1729 and 1731 for Wilhelmine von Grävenitz, mistress of Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg, by the architect Paolo Retti, who had also worked on Ludwigsburg Palace. In the early 19th century, King Frederick I of Württemberg had it substantially rebuilt as a hunting and summer residence, and the site later served many purposes over the decades, including a school and a retirement home. Around the building lies an eleven hectare landscape park laid out in the English style, still marked by its ponds and the so called English ditch.
