To make a day of it
Schloss Birlinghoven stands in Birlinghoven (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Birlinghoven stands amid woodland, set apart from the village that gave it its name, on the heights of the Pleiser Hügelland. Built in the early 1900s for the Rautenstrauch family of industrialists, this stately villa passed through several owners before becoming, from the late 1960s, home to federal German research institutes. The building is not open for sightseeing: it now houses Fraunhofer Society laboratories, and access is limited to staff and official visitors.
What to know
- The interior and grounds of the Schloss are not open to the public, access being controlled through a gatehouse.
- There are two occasional exceptions: an annual concert by the Birlinghoven men's choir in May, and a few civil weddings held there on certain days through Sankt Augustin's registry office.
- There is no museum function or public opening hours, as the building operates as an active research campus.
- The building sits within woodland away from main roads, so a passer-by can only view it from outside.
