To make a day of it

Schalksburg stands in Porta Westfalica (Kreis Minden-Lübbecke), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schalksburg was a hilltop stronghold overlooking the Weser valley at the Porta Westfalica gorge, on the river's right bank. First recorded in 1018 as Schalarborg, it belonged in turn to a Saxon duke who fell out with the emperor, then to the lords vom Berge, before passing in 1398 to the bishopric of Minden, which made it the seat of a bailiwick. Demolished in the early eighteenth century, it left only scant remains, including the former gatehouse. Visitors will therefore not find a dramatic ruin but a historically significant site, now surrounded by newer buildings built in a period style.

What to know

  • Only limited remains survive, mainly the former gatehouse and an adjoining eighteenth century dwelling.
  • The site lies in Hausberge, a district of Porta Westfalica, on the right bank of the Weser.
  • No verified information is available regarding opening hours, admission fees, or visit duration.
  • The surroundings of the former castle site are now occupied by modern buildings built in a historicizing style, which limits the overall historical impression.
