To make a day of it

Dehmer Burg stands in Bad Oeynhausen (Kreis Minden-Lübbecke), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Dehmer Burg is a former earthwork fortification, a Wallburg, perched on a ridge of the Wiehengebirge above the Dehme district of Bad Oeynhausen. It may date back to the pre-Roman Iron Age around 500 BC, and archaeological findings indicate use continuing into the early medieval period, up to the 7th century. It served as a refuge stronghold for the local population rather than a noble residence. What remains today are the earthen ramparts that once formed its triangular enclosure, protected on two sides by steep ravines.

What to know

  • The site sits on a hilltop in the Wiehengebirge and is reached on foot via an old sunken path.
  • Only earthen ramparts around one metre high survive, with no walls or buildings to see.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees since the site is an open-air area with free access.
  • It is classified as a Bodendenkmal, an archaeological ground monument.
  • The visit suits a nature walk rather than a tour of monumental architecture.
