To make a day of it

Burg Holtrup stands in Porta Westfalica (Kreis Minden-Lübbecke), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Holtrup was a hilltop fortification, now vanished, that once stood on the Schlossberg above the Weser river, in the Holtrup district of Porta Westfalica. It is thought to date from the 9th or 10th century, possibly built to watch over a nearby ford on the Weser, though its builder remains unknown. What survives is an oval earthen rampart roughly 43 by 23 metres, surrounded by a ditch still four to five metres deep. Visitors come here for the shape of the ground rather than for any standing structure.

What to know

  • No building remains on site, only a circular earthen rampart and its surrounding ditch in the woods.
  • The site sits on the elevated Schlossberg, meaning an uphill walk from the Weser valley.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are documented, since this is an open-air archaeological site rather than an equipped monument.
  • The appeal lies mainly in the landscape and history, better suited to visitors interested in subtle traces than in dramatic ruins.
