To make a day of it
Sauerburg stands in Sauerthal (Rhein-Lahn-Kreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Sauerburg is a ruined hilltop castle above the Tiefenbach stream in the Taunus hills, a few kilometres east of Kaub on the Rhine. Built in the 14th century to shield Palatinate territory from raids launched out of the nearby Burg Waldeck, it was repeatedly upgraded for defence before being largely destroyed by troops of Louis XIV in 1689. Part of it was rebuilt in the early 20th century, and the site still shows its six-storey square keep, a chapel and two outer baileys. It has formed part of the Unesco World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002.
