Burg Rheinberg is a ruined hilltop castle standing on a rocky spur above the Wisper valley in the Rheingau region. First built around 1165 for the Archbishop of Mainz and later held as a fief by the Rhenish counts, it was destroyed in 1280 during a conflict with Mainz and rebuilt in 1315, when the keep still standing today was erected. Abandoned since the late 18th century, what remains is mainly that three-storey keep, fragments of the outer wall and faint traces of the former living quarters. The site is private property and cannot be visited.
