To make a day of it
Ruine Löffelstelz stands in Mühlacker (Enzkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Löffelstelz ruin stands above the Enz valley near Dürrmenz, a district of Mühlacker, at an elevation of 280 meters. What remains today is the skeleton of a shield wall castle built around 1220 on the remains of an earlier structure, with masonry that in places exceeded 2.7 meters in thickness. The site suffered repeated fires over the centuries, including one around 1500 that marked the start of its decline, before the fortress was largely dismantled around the turn of the 18th century. The layout of the former buildings, set against the rock, is still traceable, though nothing has been rebuilt to recreate the whole.
What to know
- This is an open-air ruin with no roofed building to visit.
- No opening hours or admission fee are set, access is free and unrestricted.
- The site sits on a height above Dürrmenz, so reaching it involves a walk with some elevation gain.
- Sturdy footwear is advisable, as the ground around the remains is uneven.
