To make a day of it

Schloss Kaltenstein stands in Vaihingen an der Enz (Landkreis Ludwigsburg), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Kaltenstein overlooks the town of Vaihingen an der Enz in Baden-Württemberg, standing on the site of a medieval stronghold first recorded in 1096 as Castrum Vehingen. The property passed through the counts of Vaihingen, the margraves of Baden and the counts of Oettingen before coming to the House of Württemberg in 1339. Rebuilt into a schloss in the 16th century, it later served as a garrison, a military hospital and a workhouse, and still shows a surviving section of the medieval shield wall along with two flanking walls that once led to the town gates.

What to know

  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or visit duration are currently available.
  • The building housed a succession of uses, including a workhouse, before a youth and social welfare organisation took it over in 1949.
  • A 2020 concession agreement with a private company set out a 27-year plan for renovation and economic use of the schloss.
  • Remnants of the medieval fortification, including a section of the shield wall, can still be seen integrated into the current structure.
