The Ruine Hassenberg stands on a rocky spur 550 metres above sea level, overlooking the Danube valley opposite the village of Zwiefaltendorf, part of Riedlingen. Built by the lords of Nieder-Zwiefalten no later than the mid 14th century, it was destroyed as early as 1393 after briefly being held as an Austrian fief by Eitel von Stadion. Most of the remaining structure was dismantled around 1660, leaving only sections of the enclosing walls and the neck ditch that once separated the castle from the adjoining plateau.
