The Hünenburg bei Dransfeld is an early medieval hilltop fortification of which only an earthwork and stone rampart survive, near Adelebsen, in the Landkreis Göttingen, Lower Saxony. Built on a rocky spur above the Auschnippe valley at an elevation of 280 metres, it enclosed an area of roughly 120 by 120 metres, shielded by steep slopes on three sides and a thick dry stone wall on the exposed eastern approach. Excavations carried out during the 20th century uncovered a deep ditch, a bastion added at a later stage, and pottery fragments dating from the 9th to the 11th century. What remains today is a wooded archaeological site with no standing structures, reached on foot through the forest.

What to know

The site lies deep in woodland, within the Ossenberg-Fehrenbusch nature reserve, and can only be reached on foot.
No standing buildings survive apart from the circular rampart and ditch, so there is no structure to tour.
An observation platform with an information board was set up on the eastern side, outside the ditch, following forestry work in 2015.
Entering the site without permission is not allowed, in line with its protected status as a Kulturdenkmal.
There are no opening hours, admission fees, or visitor facilities, as the site remains a managed forest area under Lower Saxony's state forestry administration.
