To make a day of it

Bramburg stands in Hann. Münden (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Bramburg is a ruined hilltop castle set on a wooded slope of the Bramwald, rising nearly a hundred metres above the Weser valley. Probably founded in the early 13th century to protect the possessions of Corvey Abbey, it was besieged and burned several times before fading from historical record after the 17th century. What remains today is chiefly a tall stone keep some twenty metres high, sections of the surrounding wall, and a deep defensive ditch, all within an untouched forest setting.

What to know

  • The ruin can only be reached on forest and hiking trails, with no direct road access.
  • The site is freely accessible, but climbing the keep is not possible.
  • Expect a fairly steep walk up from the L561 road between Hemeln and Glashütte.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open-air ruin.
  • The uneven ground and deep ditch call for caution, especially with young children.
