To make a day of it

Ahlberg stands in Gutsbezirk Reinhardswald (Landkreis Kassel), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Ahlberg is a wooded hill in the Reinhardswald region of Hesse, rising to nearly 395 metres, with the remains of a circular rampart enclosing its summit plateau. This fortification, likely dating back to prehistoric times and reused in the early Middle Ages, later supported a late medieval watchtower, of which foundation remains and sections of wall still survive. The site also bears traces of lignite mining carried out from the 18th century until 1925, with a few structures still visible at the foot of the hill. Today it is mainly a destination for hikers, reached via a themed trail linking the Ahlberg to the former mining settlement and the deserted village of Reinersen.

What to know

  • The site can be visited freely outdoors, with no fixed opening hours.
  • Access is via the themed trail starting from the Ahlberg bus stop, with a steep climb on the final stretch.
  • The terrain is wooded and uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended, especially in wet weather.
  • The visible remains are modest: an earthen rampart, some tower foundations, and traces of the former lignite mine.
  • The full Ahlberg-Mariendorf cultural trail is about 4.5 km long.
