In the Broich district of Jülich stands a former noble residence that grew out of a medieval motte: Haus Broich. The site combines a moated baroque manor house, the ruins of a forecourt destroyed in the Second World War, and a French-style garden followed by an English landscape park. King Louis XIV of France stopped here in May 1672 on his way to Neuss. The estate remains in private hands, still linked to the von Hallberg family after whom it is also known as Schloss Hallberg.
