Built of brick in the 1530s on the foundations of an earlier structure, the complex was reshaped in the mid nineteenth century, when a Cologne architect added turrets, battlements and balustrades in the neo Gothic taste of the time. The estate, held by the same family for more than four centuries, passed in the mid twentieth century to a regional mining company that opened it to visitors. The surrounding park, planted with old trees and threaded with stretches of water, ranks among the notable gardens of the Rhineland.
