To make a day of it

Burgrest Hüneberg stands in Sipplingen (Bodenseekreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Hüneberg, also known as Burghalde, is the ruin of a hilltop castle standing on a sandstone ridge 528 metres above the village of Sipplingen. Built in the 11th century by the lords of Hüneberg, it lost its seigneurial role when that family died out in the 14th century, after which the stronghold gradually fell into decay. What remains today includes part of the residential tower, with a wall section still six metres high, along with traces of a defensive ditch.

What to know

  • The site sits on a wooded hilltop above Sipplingen, reached by a hiking path from the village.
  • Only remains of the residential tower and a defensive ditch survive, with no roofed structure or visitor facilities.
  • A visit means an outdoor walk, so sturdy footwear is recommended for the uneven ground.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is a freely accessible open-air site.
