Burg Wildeck rises above the village of Abstatt on a rocky spur at the edge of the Löwenstein hills, in Baden-Württemberg. Likely built by the lords of Heinriet in the high Middle Ages, it passed in 1492 to the Counts of Löwenstein, who were already growing wine there by the 16th century. From its terraces, the view extends over Abstatt and neighbouring villages such as Beilstein, Ilsfeld and Untergruppenbach. Since 1940, its buildings have housed an experimental winery run by the Weinsberg viticultural school, where the Samtrot and Dornfelder grape varieties were developed.
