To make a day of it
Burg Wevelinghoven stands in Grevenbroich (Rhein-Kreis Neuss), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Wevelinghoven was the ancestral seat of the lords of Wevelinghoven, a motte raised on the left bank of the Erft river in the Wevelinghoven district of Grevenbroich. Of the medieval stronghold only an earthen mound about eight metres high remains, surrounded by a later moat laid out as part of a classical garden design. A small timber-framed pavilion now stands on top of the mound, the only visible structure on the site today. The Wevelinghoven family, recorded from 1075 and continuously from 1138 until the line died out in 1450, counted Florenz von Wevelinghoven, bishop of Münster and Utrecht, among its most notable members.
What to know
- Only an earthen mound and a moat remain of the medieval stronghold, no original building has survived.
- The site can be freely visited outdoors, more as a landscape feature than a built monument.
- The small timber-framed pavilion seen on top dates from a later garden layout, not from the medieval period.
- As no information on opening hours, fees or access is available, visitors should expect only a brief outdoor stop.
