The Altes Schloss in Grevenbroich stands on the site of a medieval stronghold founded around the year 1000, on the left bank of the Erft river near the town's historic centre. Of the former residence of the counts of Kessel and later the dukes of Jülich, rebuilt as a Renaissance schloss between 1561 and 1577 under Duke Wilhelm the Rich, only the residential building, a service building, a gatehouse and remnants of the moat survive. The present complex, restored after the Second World War with two modern wings added to the west, combines surviving older fabric with mid-twentieth-century reconstruction.
