To make a day of it

Schloss Harff stands in Bedburg (Rhein-Erft-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Harff no longer stands: this moated manor near Bedburg, in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, was demolished by explosives in 1972 to make way for the expanding Frimmersdorf open-pit coal mine. Originally a fortified medieval house founded around 1348 by Johann von Harff, it was gradually transformed over the centuries into a romantic island residence surrounded by a moat. One of its notable residents was Arnold von Harff, known for chronicling his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, and Rome at the end of the 15th century. Today, only a memorial stone and an information panel at Morken-Harff mark the site where the castle once stood.

What to know
