To make a day of it

Motte Vusseberg stands in Neuss (Rhein-Kreis Neuss), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Motte Vusseberg is the remnant of a medieval motte, a mound once topped by a fortified structure, standing on the banks of the Erft river in Holzheim, near Neuss, not far from the Gut Hombroich estate. What survives today is an earthen mound roughly 45 metres across and about 5 metres high, with traces of its surrounding circular ditch still discernible. It may be the site referred to in a 1347 document as the 'castrum dictum Capelle', though no standing structure remains. This is a site for those drawn to landscape archaeology rather than built architecture.

What to know

  • There is no visible castle building here, only an earthen mound and remnants of a surrounding ditch.
  • The site is outdoors and freely accessible near the Erft river, with no opening hours or admission fee.
  • A visit consists of observing the earthworks, as no standing structure has survived.
  • It lies close to the Gut Hombroich estate, making it easy to combine both stops in one outing.
  • As the ground is natural and unprepared, sturdy footwear is advisable.
