To make a day of it

Burg Virnich stands in Zülpich (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Virnich was a moated stronghold that once stood at the hamlet of Virnich, near Schwerfen, a district of Zülpich. Demolished around 1860, it no longer exists: only its rubble stone courtyard survives, now used as a horse farm. Its interest lies mainly in its documented history since the early 14th century and in a scholar's theory linking it to the legendary Nibelung fortress of the Thidrekssaga.

What to know

  • The medieval building itself is gone, torn down around 1860, so there is no castle structure left to visit on site.
  • Only the stone-built courtyard remains, now part of a private horse farm.
  • No visiting hours, fees, or access details exist, as this is not an open monument.
  • The site's interest is mainly historical, tied to its succession of noble owners and a theory connecting it to Nibelung legend.
