Burg Irnich stands to the east of the village of Schwerfen, a district of Zülpich, on grounds that trace back to a rural estate of Roman origin before becoming, in the 14th century, the seat of a local noble family. The four-winged complex, once ringed by moats that are now dry but still clearly traceable in the landscape, retains a gatehouse decorated with carved coats of arms and a timber-framed barn topped by a Gothic corner tower. Since the 1980s the estate has belonged to a family that restored it carefully and now uses it for agricultural purposes.
