To make a day of it

Burg Schildberg stands in Lügde (Kreis Lippe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Schildberg was a spur castle that has since vanished, perched on a hilltop east of Lügde in the Kreis Lippe. What remains today is a partly preserved ditch and scant traces of the inner courtyard, the rest of the site having been destroyed by old stone quarries. Archaeological excavations carried out in 2017 by the Lippisches Landesmuseum uncovered the remains of a burnt timber-framed structure, along with a lime kiln and pottery shards dating from the early medieval period. Visitors come here less for a standing monument than for a buried site of history, loosely dated between the mid-11th and mid-13th centuries.

What to know

  • No standing structure survives, only a ditch and ground traces remain.
  • The site sits on a wooded hilltop east of Lügde, freely accessible outdoors.
  • The remains are protected as a Kulturdenkmal, so nothing should be dug up or removed.
  • No information on opening hours, fees or visitor facilities is available.
  • The visit suits those interested in archaeology rather than castle architecture.
