To make a day of it

Hünenburg stands in Bad Pyrmont (Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Hünenburg is a hilltop castle ruin on the Königsberg, above the Oesdorf district of the town of Bad Pyrmont. No historical document names its builders, and the site itself only came to light in 1910, when excavations uncovered the remains of a residential tower surrounded by ditches and earthworks. Much of what visitors see today, particularly the tower walls, dates from a reconstruction carried out that same year, in the romantic castle-revival style of the period. The site covers a spur of roughly 50 by 30 metres, with traces of sunken dwellings found west of the tower.

What to know

  • The site sits on the Königsberg hill above Oesdorf and requires walking up to reach it.
  • The visible tower is not fully original: it was rebuilt on the excavated foundations in 1910.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal.
  • No opening hours, fees or accessibility details are documented, this is an open-air ruin site with free access.
  • There is no roofed building to visit, only ditch and rampart remains along with the reconstructed tower.
