To make a day of it

Burg Philippstein stands in Braunfels (Lahn-Dill-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Philippstein stands on a rocky spur above the village it is named after, some thirty metres up, in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis district of Hesse. Built at the end of the 14th century by Count Philip I of Nassau-Weilburg to secure his territory and the mines nearby, it lost its military role early on and fell into decay. Villagers later quarried its stones for their own buildings, to the point that the keep nearly collapsed. That keep can now be climbed, fitted with a slate roof, alongside wall remains and foundations uncovered by a local heritage association.
