To make a day of it

Burg Kalsmunt stands in Wetzlar (Lahn-Dill-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Kalsmunt rises above the town of Wetzlar on a basalt outcrop, roughly 90 metres above the old town. Only ruins remain of this former imperial stronghold, dominated by the keep, whose platform now offers a view over Wetzlar and the Lahn valley. The origins of the fortress are still debated among historians, though its defensive role became prominent from the 12th century onward, under Frederick Barbarossa. The site still bears traces of its turbulent history, down to military additions made in the 20th century.
