Greifenstein Castle rises above the village that bears its name, in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis, atop a hill of the Dillwesterwald reaching 441 metres. First recorded in 1160, destroyed in 1298 and later rebuilt, it was turned into a Baroque schloss in the late 17th century before falling into ruin once the counts of Solms-Greifenstein moved to Braunfels. Visitors today can explore a twin-towered keep topped by a gryphon weathervane, a Gothic chapel now sitting underground beneath a Baroque church, and a bell museum housed in one of the bastions.
